Archäologie und Seismologie
Published by the German Archaeological Institute DAI in Rome (Deutsches
Archäologische Institut.
The earthquake in the year 62 A.D. is considered to be one of
the few certain chronological facts in the history of the Vesuvius
region. Repeated finds from the last few years seem to indicate
one or more further earthquakes before the eruption of Vesuvius
in 79 A.D. This perception is very interesting both for archaeology,
for which the previous picture is considerably altered, and also
for modern seismology. For this reason, during the convention held
in Boscoreale in November 1993 an attempt was made to establish
connections between the latest research results from both disciplines
through interdisciplinary and controversial exchanges of opinion.
»Archäologie und Seismologie, 80 years after
Lanciani’s pioneering work, opens a new path in the study of the
evolution of ancient buildings and sites in seismically and volcanoligically
active environements.« AJA 100
