STUDIES ON ANTIQUE PAINTING AND USE OF COLOR VI

Nadja J. Koch Techne und Erfindung in der klassischen Malerei.

A terminological investigation.

In the 5th Century B.C. the scientific discipline of art criticism developed from the collection of knowledge and recipes at the disposal of painters and sculptures. The terminology, which was left to us in particular by Plinius, makes it possible to discover specialised terms, which help to clarify many controversial questions of the story of technology and of the organisation of the workshops. Through particular study of writings on art (Xenokrates of Athens) and the philosophical examination of art in the process of establishing itself (Plato and Aristoteles) a theory of classical art can be achieved.
