STUDIES ON ANTIQUE PAINTING AND USE OF COLOR VII
Richard Posamentir, Bemalte attische Grabstelen
klassischer Zeit
When looking on the great mass of attic grave reliefs of the 5.
and 4. centuries B.C. the number of painted steles seems low. This
image has been corrected by using photopgraphic methods like UV
or Streiflicht. Besides simple steles reliefs and grave vessels
have been examined on traces of painting. Figurative images and
ornaments have been reconstructed in many drawings and convey an
impression of the rich color of a classic necropolis.
The new monuments, received by the method, bring new light on the
renaissance of attic grave art in the 5th century. Posamentir compares
them with contemporary reliefs as well as with classic painting.
