The changes in meaning in the antique image of the Centaur, from Classic till late antique times, are studied, dated and examined within the framework of general cultural and mentality historical tendencies. Particularly the ambivalence of the "horse-men" inspired antique art to ever-new interpretations, so that the Centaurs can nowadays be viewed as indicators of the general moving of the times.
