The author spent over 20 years using scientific methods to study the multicoloured sculptures of archaic and early classic times in the collections and museums of the whole world. The unexpected amount of new observations, which are presented here completely supplies perceptions concerning the aesthetic appearance and also the importance of antique sculpture. The rich illustrations show the traces of the coloured version in the form of light ray and UV fluorescence photos. The documentation is accompanied by reconstructions, which are available as drawings, watercolours and as newly made artificial marble castings.
