The Electronic Inventory of the
Glyptothek in Munich
In a period of just two-and-a-half years, the entire collection
of the Glyptothek was completely
recorded. With this context, entries were revised and a complete
bibliography was drawn up of the individual pieces, extending back
into the 19th century. The photo library was included in the programme,
comprising around 5,000 pictures. This collection of digital pictures
is supplemented by the inclusion of all classicistic extensions,
from corner to corner. These pieces are thus accessible again for
the first time since the war. The database is rounded off by a directory
of the reference pieces, some of which have been recorded with pictures.
The museum staff is now in a position to obtain all relevant information
on a piece within the shortest time. They can fall back on their
own data, but they can also find out relevant datings of the authors
included in the bibliography, for example, or study the reference
pieces. Possible additional applications range from the automatic
ordering of photos to making the entire museum collection accessible
in the Internet.
