Johannes Bergemann, Demos und Thanatos
A new analysis of the iconography of the Attic grave reliefs and
their positioning in the grave areas, which places the values of
Athens society for families (Oikoi) and family members in the foreground.
Individual studies refer to the furnishing of the burial grounds,
to the representation of emotional motives, to differences of age
in the faces and to socio-historical analysis. An attempt at statistical
analysis of important iconographic phenomena and of extensive catalogues
builds the foundation for the results. About 400 detailed photographs
of the heads and high quality pieces by G. Fittschen-Badura open
a new perspective of the Attic grave reliefs and enable for the
first time systematic comparisons with other races.
»… the immense value of this book … lies
in its convincing and thorough revision of the many out-of-date
theories surrounding Attic grave reliefs. This is accomplished through
analyses of the whole production of this category and their grave
enclosures, and it will greatly help future studies in ancient perceptions
of death to be less colored by our own modern attitudes to these
themes.«
